Black Lives Matter
ILDEO stands in solidarity with the black community, protesters, and all people doing the work to dismantle racism in our country. However, words of support are not enough to undo 400 years of racism. We are committed to holding space and time for the dance community to reflect and dialogue on ways to fight for justice. In the coming weeks, ILDEO will continue to examine what actions it takes to support anti-racist work in dance education. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please share them here.
At this current moment, there are a variety of ways to contribute to anti-racist work and supporting those demanding justice. Below are a few suggestions.
Support local bail funds: Support protesters in your city by finding local bail funds or donate here to have your donation divided between cities across the country
Increase power in marginalized, predominantly Black communities: Support BVM Capacity Building Institute and help provide training and support for community-based organizations.
Educate yourself & the people around you: We encourage non-black allies to deepen their understanding of how racism affects us all by reading these anti-racism resources and having conversations with your family and friends.
Work to decolonize performing arts education: Explore this vast database of resources on decolonizing and diversifying dance education, theatre education, and performing arts spaces.
Join community conversations on dance and race: Find ILDEO’s Dance Teacher Virtual Sharings here, and NDEO’s Webinar series here, to join others in dance education as we explore current issues facing the dance community.
